Bora Bora is world famous for its stunning beauty and over water bungalows. But little do people know, that the fishing there is also very good with one of the largest marlin captures known to man was caught just a few miles from Bora Bora's fringing reef.
The story is legend now and a visit to the market in Raiatea will allow you to see the photo that is a shrine on the wall. The marlin was said to weigh 1400kg.
Bora Bora is a year round fishery. Blue Marlin, Yellowfin Tuna, Wahoo and Mahi Mahi frequent the waters surrounding the Jewel in the pacific. The odd big black marlin is also caught each year.
Fishing will generally start as you exit the pass, the reef drops away into the abyss and the predators like Blue Marlin and Yellowfin Tuna are often found just wide of the pass.
Trolling lures is the method of choice, so sit back and enjoy the comfort on SeaWolf with her Gyro-stabiliser and air conditioning and let the crew take great care of you.
For the Deep Drop enthusiast, SeaWolf is equiped with two 24v LP reels. A quick drop down to the inky depths surrounding Bora Bora can yield some very tasty table fish, such as Red Snapper, Pomfrets and the ever succulent Alfonsino.
Casting Poppers and Jigging along the reef edge can yield Giant Trevally and other reef species.

The largest Blue marlin ever caught is 1,805lb in Hawaii caught by Capt Cornelius Choy in 1970.
Blue Marlin to 1560lbs have been caught in French Polynesia. Blue marlin frequent the waters surrounding Bora Bora. They are a tough and spectacular fish!

The largest black marlin ever recorded is Alfred Glassell’s fish caught in Peru. 1560lbs. Although not a common capture in Bora Bora or Tahiti, every year there are usually one of two very big specimens caught. Be prepared for a long battle when you hook one of these giants!

The striped marlin is regarded as the most beautiful of the Marlin, although all marlin can show stripes, the Striped Marlin shows them far more regularly. A temperate water fish that remains near the surface. We often catch them in Bora Bora in the cooler months of August and September.

These beautiful Bill fish are an inshore species and have been spotted inside the Lagoon at Bora Bora, but most commonly caught near the reef pass.

AKA, Dorado, Dolphin, Dolphin Fish are Considered to be the fastest growing fish in the ocean, they can reach a length of over 4 feet in the first year. A Very common catch around Bora Bora, we must first spot the birds and then we will find the Mahi Mahi. Upon hook up, they will jump and dance around the ocean and are superb eating.

AKA Ono, Pacific King fish has probably the sharpest teeth in the ocean. They are also regarded as one of the fastest fish swimming up to 80km/hr. A fun Sport fish that swim in the waters off Bora Bora. Watch out for your toes!

They can grow to over 400lbs but a 4 year old Yellowfin averages 130lbs.
Yellow Fin Tuna frequent the waters surrounding Bora Bora all year round. They are as fun and tough to Catch as they are delicious to eat! The local delicacy of Poison Cru is made with Fresh Yellow Fin.

They can grow up to 420lbs but are generally the size of Yellow Fin. They are highly migratory and a sort after commercial fish as they are very good eating.

The Skipjack Is a fast and tough fighter which if treated correctly are also great to eat and Earns the best choice label from the FDA. what ever that means? they are great in sashimi.

AKA GT, Ulua. They can grow to over 140lbs and are regarded as one of the toughest fish in the Sea. We can target them by casting poppers towards the reef edge of an island close to Bora Bora.
Scientific name: Gymnosarda Unicolor
AKA, White tuna, despite the name “Tuna” this species is actually a Bonito. Never the less it is a tough mean adversary on conventional tackle and also great to eat. Their fearsome mouth full of teeth live up to their name sake.

ONce considered to be a single species with global distribution, However the discovery of a further 8 species is now confirmed, with 6 in the Pacific. A tough fighter for the fishermen who like to sight fish. they are found on the sand flats around Bora Bora and other Tuamotus atolls.

The barracuda is often a large predatory, ray finned salt water fish. He likes an easy meal and can be found close to the reef and also offshore. We tend not to eat these fish, but they are often consumed in Tahiti.

AKA - Leopard coral grouper, blue spotted coral grouper is a much sort after species for the table in other countries. Here in French Polynesia, we tend to stay well clear of these fish as they more often then not carry the Cigartera toxin.

AKA - Yellowedge coronation trout, fairy cod or Moon Tail sea bass. Although very similar to Coral trout, they are a sort after table fish in Bora Bora. We target them in 80 meters to 120 meters around the reef edges of Bora Bora.

AKA Rays Bream, Papio live at depths down to 1,000 meters.
They are delicious eating. The reef edge surrounding Bora Bora drops away sharply and this is where we drop our baits down on the electric reels.

AKA PARU here in tahiti. We catch them in depths of 100 to 400 meters and they are well known for great eating quality.

AKA - Flame tail, Onaga is a deep water favourite. If you catch one of these, we will keep it fresh on ice for your evening meal - be sure the chef doesn’t take some home himself!
